“ I have not seen such an horror since 2004. Children are coming to the hospital in extreme critical conditions” stressed Denis Mukwege, Medical Director of Panzi General Referral Hospital.
According Doctor Desire Alumeti, the forensic doctor of the hospital, nine children from one year and a half to twelve years old have been raped with extreme violence in the South Kivu Province, Kabare and Mwenga Territories respectively, since the beginning of May 2013, leading to the death of two young girls.
For each case, the modus operandi is similar: children are abducted in their house, raped in the bush and then abandoned. Two young girls died following these inhumane acts. Others have been found with severe gynecological wounds, stated the doctor.
Survivors have been referred by local medical centers to Panzi where appropriate quality care is provided to the children.
Investigative police and Uvira Chief Prosecutor Office have opened cases regarding those serious crimes. As of today, three alleged perpetrators are in custody; among them, two have confessed their offense, according to police sources.
Doctor Mukwege raised that “ mobile courts shall be established without delay to give justice to the victims, hold the criminals accountable and shed light on who is behind these atrocities”.
