Panzi Hospital is well known for its gynecological service and in particular for its program for treating women victims of sexual violence. The treatment philosophy of the hospital under the leadership of its founder and medical director Dr Denis Mukwege, is holistic where all aspects of the women´s well-being are met, medical, psychological, spiritual, socioeconomic, judicial etc.
What is less known outside Bukavu, is that the General Reference Hospital of Panzi besides a gynecological service also has departments for internal medicine, surgery and a pediatrics including a neonatalogy unit. The total number of outpatients visits during 2011 were close to 18 500.
Panzi Hospital has 4 different departments, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Internal Medicine, Surgery and Paediatrics. Additionally, the Hospital has its own laboratory, blood bank, radiology, ultrasound and endoscopy units and offers services in ophthalmology and dentistry. A Nutrition Centre treats patients in the hospital and also conducts outreach to the surrounding areas. Around 250 people get food once a week combined with advice about nutrition and maternal health care.
The Hospital is also filling a void in South Kivu by serving hundreds of HIV AIDS patients and their families with holistic care. There is a Radiology department where 5522 examinations were performed during 2011 and a Laboratory where a total of almost 156 000 analyses were performed during 2011.
There is also a Pharmacy located within the hospital.
